METAPHYSICS OF CORE MATTER

This exhibition in digital space refers to a physical place that is very special to me: my studio in Berlin. Over the last few months I have been both developing the space and working on the new and still ongoing body of work Metaphysics of Core Matter, which is now being presented to the public with the first images made for the exhibition context. Prevailing materials of our time undergo a transformation in this work - a revaluation, a being seen, a real showdown of core matter. A metaphysics, that is.

Likewise, I subject reflexive trivial actions to an inspired and ironic questioning. This show of works now presents for the first time the result of a research on material, mounting, process and framing that reflects and realizes the presentation of photography under environmentally friendly parameters.

It is an exhibition on two layers, made of an online viewing room accessible anywhere and a very personal real space of the studio of Silja Yvette. If you are interested in a more detailed exploration of the physical appearance of the works, accompanied by a conversation, you are cordially invited to visit the studio. Please use the button here below to get in contact with me for a visit by appointment.

-  MATERIALS MATTER  -

The project Metaphysics of Core Matter is about the artistic investigation of commonly used modern and contemporary material, possibilities of its sustainable innovation and its integration into artistic practice in terms of material and their use for example in packaging. This refers to materials like foams, polystyrenes and aluminum, coming through often risky extraction techniques from the core of the earth. I stage these leftover materials from private consumption, logistic fields and industrial production as temporary sculptures photographically in my studio. My project goes hand in hand with the rediscovery of domesticity during the crisis years 2020 and 2021 and the materials of our everyday comforts, which reach me in this time.

-  THE TOOLBOX
      OF MODERNITY  -

It all started with a burning interest in omnipresent styrofoam packaging that we all know flood our homes with purchases and online orders.

I couldn't shake the feeling that this material and its industrial press forms could be like a pigment of our time. A kind of toolbox of modernity. An imprint of the things we desire.

-  MATERIAL INNOVATION  -

The latest development step of the project I took when it came to the type of image presentation and how I would like to produce the work with what kind of responsibilities. A cooperation arose with Recom Art Berlin, an outstanding laboratory for photography and research, with which I have since collaborated with for the development of more sustainable photo production. In this collaboration, I was even given the great opportunity to shoot in Recom's spaces and bring their production materials into focus. The special daylight equipment and scanners as well as the light dome, which are normally used to view and document photographs in the best possible light conditions, functioned here as stages in the background for those things that fall away during this production. I thereby playfully visualize the unused mass of material that the production of photographs for different reasons has accumulated. I shift the focus of the image to the negative cast of the image. One could also say that I bring the shadow side of photographic image production into photographic light.

-  THE FOAMS PARADOX  -

There is a particular contrast that appeals to me about foams and polystyrene as materials and inventions of the modern age: the wrapping, protecting, insulating, the spatial surroundings of the actual, the negative casting of all preciousnesses on the one hand and the vainly trivial handling on the other. Useful, but worthless. Decaying in the fulfilment of its unique logistic mission and then excessively inferior. I call it:  the foams paradox.

-  EXPANSION OF THINGS  -

What concerns me furthermore about these photographic sculptures made of foam, Styrofoam and packaging material is the foamy, the enveloping, the volume-expanding. A kind of visualized air or cavity in cellular structure. The filling of an air space around the product, what we actually intend to possess, until the next logistical unit. The airtight sealing and severing of living things. The doubling, tripling, quadrupling of protective shells that nature had thought well anyway. And contrary to all better-intentioned efforts, the packaging industry has exploded in the last two years showcasing all their know-how in separating layers, protective films and hygienic vapor barriers.

-  TEMPORARY SCULPTURES  -

This falling away from the things we desire, I mean these packaging forms that I find, are staged, piled up, somehow crowned by me. It is the fiction of an ascent of material, but it also shows the transience of this and the rational hubris of its inventor and disposer. My work as an artist here is maybe a temporary ordering of a chaotic environmental state and a joking with the contextual forms of exhibition presentation of the white cube and the pedestal culture, in other words, that which needs to be considered in a concentrated way and in a contemplative offside. A subtle play with the assumptions regarding myth and progress – something that comes up again and again in my work.

-  RISE AND FALL  -

From a sociological and psychological point of view I find exciting in its ambiguity how a human will has pressed itself into this material, these industrially, geometrically and logistically useful pressed forms that loose so quickly their sharpness and crumble into harmful microparticles. How this only just expressed vision of perfection changes to something unpleasant to get rid of.
